Loose / Lost Crown

If your dental crown has become broken, loose, or lost, then you will need to come in to see us as soon as possible. When a crown comes loose, or even just partially debonded from the natural tooth, the danger is that bacteria can penetrate the area it used to cover and protect. This can lead to further infection and decay, which we always want to try and prevent at all costs.

You’ll also find the experience of a loose or lost crown uncomfortable, and it can lead to pain and increased sensitivity that many patients find difficult. Eating, chewing, hot and cold temperatures, and even air can cause the newly exposed tooth to twinge with pain. With our fast response emergency care and expert treatment, we’ll be able to treat you quickly and efficiently. While we might not be able to repair or replace your crown in the moment, we will be able to fit you with a temporary solution while we go about finding the right treatment for you. We’ll also ensure that any pain or discomfort is eliminated, so that you can leave the practice in comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use my current crown as a replacement?

If the crown that has fallen loose isn’t damaged, and you’ve managed to keep hold of it, we may be able to simply reattach it to the tooth. This will of course, depend on the extent of damage present, as well as the state of the tooth itself.

Can you fix a broken crown?

In some cases, we’ll be able to fix a chipped or cracked crown with composite bonding, but if the damage is more extensive, then a new crown will be needed to ensure the full function of the tooth is restored, and your oral health is protected.

How can I avoid chipping, cracking, or breaking my dental crown?

The way to ensure the longevity and health of your dental crown is through proper oral hygiene and care. You should also try to avoid grinding your teeth as this puts unwanted pressure on the crown, as well as hard foodstuffs which can cause it to become damaged.

What are the follow up or aftercare procedures?

Depending on the damage present and the state of your current crown, you may have to come back into the practice to have a new crown fitted and applied. We should be able to apply a temporary crown in the meantime.
