Jaw Problems

Problems with the jaw often manifest as pain in the jaw area (as well as elsewhere in the face), difficulty eating, lockjaw, and headaches. Often caused by malocclusion (having a misaligned bite), jaw problems can cause teeth grinding and clenching which can lead to:

the wearing down of the teeth,
clicking in the jaw,
migraines,
back, neck, and shoulder pain.

Many of these issues fall under temporomandibular joint disorder or TMJD. While TMJD can be incredibly difficult to live with, especially if you live with chronic symptoms of pain, it is treatable.

About this Condition

Symptoms of TMJD can be incredibly wide ranging, and can cause vast amounts of discomfort and pain in the patient, even to a debilitating degree. Many patients with TMJD or other jaw problems may not ever experience such symptoms and issues, but we would still recommend treating the underlying issue as it can cause the teeth to become worn down. We can help diagnose the problem and form a treatment plan that’s built around you. There are a variety of different treatments available when it come to problems with the jaw and TMJD including:
Splints/mouthguards are made especially for each individual patient, and can help relieve pressure on the jaw,
Botox injections applied directly to the jaw area stop the muscles in the area from moving, helping to reduce the repeated movements such as clenching and grinding that can be the cause of so much jaw pain,
Orthodontic treatment can help realign teeth and create a more even bite,
Maxillofacial surgery may be necessary in more advanced cases, in which case we would talk through all the options and outcomes with you at a consultation.

  I recently had an emergency appointment at Square Mile Dentist Centre after my filling fell off, and I couldn’t be more impressed with the care I received from Dr. Ankeet Shah and the team. As someone who is generally anxious about dental visits, I was particularly thankful for the calm and comforting environment they created. Dr. Shah was incredibly professional, using advanced techniques that made the process smooth and surprisingly pleasant. The cleanliness and efficiency of the clinic also stood out to me, making the entire experience far less stressful than anticipated.   I spoke with Rosie who was really lovely, kind and helpful. Rosie managed to help me get booked in for an initial consultation which was urgently needed.

During my consultation the staff at reception were really lovely, the dental nurse who saw me was very helpful. I was given an insight to my root canal issue and what the treatment will include. He also provided me with antibiotics which was needed for my swollen gum (after I had the filling done).

The dental nurse was very clear on what I needed and gave me advice on how I can better manage my tooth issue. Overall my experience with the dental practice has been amazing. Very helpful, attentive and efficient!
