Problems with the jaw often manifest as pain in the jaw area (as well as elsewhere in the face), difficulty eating, lockjaw, and headaches. Often caused by malocclusion (having a misaligned bite), jaw problems can cause teeth grinding and clenching which can lead to:

  •     the wearing down of the teeth, 
  •     clicking in the jaw,
  •     migraines,
  •     back, neck, and shoulder pain.

Many of these issues fall under temporomandibular joint disorder or TMJD. While TMJD can be incredibly difficult to live with, especially if you live with chronic symptoms of pain, it is treatable.

About this Condition

Symptoms of TMJD can be incredibly wide ranging, and can cause vast amounts of discomfort and pain in the patient, even to a debilitating degree. Many patients with TMJD or other jaw problems may not ever experience such symptoms and issues, but we would still recommend treating the underlying issue as it can cause the teeth to become worn down.   • We can help diagnose the problem and form a treatment plan that’s built around you. There are a variety of different treatments available when it come to problems with the jaw and TMJD including:
  • Splints/mouthguards are made especially for each individual patient, and can help relieve pressure on the jaw,
  • Botox injections applied directly to the jaw area stop the muscles in the area from moving, helping to reduce the repeated movements such as clenching and grinding that can be the cause of so much jaw pain,
  • Orthodontic treatment can help realign teeth and create a more even bite,
  •  Maxillofacial surgery may be necessary in more advanced cases, in which case we would talk through all the options and outcomes with you at a consultation.
