Lost / Broken Retainer

Retainers are one of the most important parts of your teeth straightening journey. When your orthodontic treatment is finished, the retainer is the implement that will ensure your teeth remain in their new position, and that your smile continues to be straight and beautiful. So, losing or breaking a retainer can be a big deal. At Square Mile Dental Centre, we’ll be able to treat you for your lost or broken retainer at an emergency appointment, as we’re well aware of how important it is to get your smile back on the straight and narrow.

Retainers come in both ‘fixed’ and ‘removable’ options. Some patients will wear one or the other, while other patients may have both. Only removable retainers can become lost, of course, but fixed retainers – like removable retainers – can get broken by becoming detached or damaged in some way. Whether you’re dealing with a broken retainer or a lost one, we’ll be able to help you through this orthodontic emergency.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve lost my retainer – how soon should I book an appointment?

You should book an appointment here with us as soon as possible. While missing a few days of wearing your retainer shouldn’t cause too many issues, wait too long and your teeth could begin to revert to their original position.

What happens if my teeth have moved too much?

If your teeth have realigned as a result of your lost or broken retainer, then we may well have to fit you for a new set of braces or aligners to reset your teeth. This is called orthodontic relapse, and is fairly common although we always recommend trying to avoid it as much as possible.

What are the follow up or aftercare procedures?

We may recommend a new brace / aligner to realign your teeth if they have moved too much. We’ll also have to take an impression / digital scan in order for your new replacement retainer to be made. We would then recommend ways to ensure you don’t lose or break it again! This could include using a brightly coloured storage box, so you can always easily find your retainer, for example.

How long can I go without wearing my removable retainer?

Our recommendations here at Square Mile Dental Centre are all based on consistent wear of your retainer. If you have lost or broken your removable retainer, you can go 1-3 nights without wearing it, but beyond that you may be in danger of allowing your teeth to begin to move back into their original position.
