Toothache

At Square Mile Dental Centre, we know how painful and difficult it can be to live with a toothache. If your toothache has come on suddenly, or if you’ve been experiencing toothache persistently for a few days, we’d recommend booking an emergency appointment here with us as soon as possible. Toothache can be a sign of bacterial infection in the mouth, and could mean you’re in need of further treatment such as a filling or even a root canal treatment.

At your emergency appointment, our first aim will be to reduce or remove any pain that you are in. We’ll then try to determine and diagnose the root cause or causes of your toothache, which could involve taking X-rays of the mouth. This will help us thoroughly and accurately treat your toothache, and may result in us asking you back for further treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes a toothache?

Toothache can be caused by a variety of issues including gum disease, a cavity / carie, abscess, a cracked tooth, or a loose or leaky filling. In these cases, the dental pulp of the tooth may have become infected, resulting in the pain you are experiencing. There are other causes of toothache that don’t involve the infection of the dental pulp however, and these include: impacted wisdom teeth, a sinus infection, gum ulcers, or a jaw injury.

Will it hurt?

Our main aim when treating a patient for toothache in an emergency is to reduce the amount of pain you are in.

What are the risks associated with toothache?

Toothache is normally an indication that something is wrong in the mouth and can even cause other symptoms such as headaches and even a fever. By determining the cause of the toothache, we’ll be able to treat it effectively and hopefully prevent any further damage or infection from occurring.

What are the follow up or aftercare procedures?

Depending on the cause of your toothache, we will ask you back for an appointment to continue and complete the treatment. In the meantime, we’ll let you know how to treat the toothache at home – this could be over-the-counter painkillers, a cold compress to the outside of the mouth, antiseptic benzocaine, or simply using warm water to thoroughly wash the mouth out.
